Sclerotherapy injections (varicose vein)
Sclerotherapy involves injecting a sclerosing agent (in liquid or foam form) into the varicose vein, causing it to permanently close or sclerose. Simple and safe, this treatment is by far the most commonly prescribed. It is ideal for treating small to medium-sized varicose veins.
What should I expect?
Initially, a meeting with the medical director is necessary to determine your treatment plan. A clinical nurse will inject a sclerosing agent using a fine needle, and the sclerosed veins will gradually disappear.
More than one treatment may be needed to eliminate varicose veins, and maintenance sessions are recommended to prevent the appearance of new varicose veins.
This treatment requires no recovery time. Lasting a minimum of 20 minutes, the treatment may cause a slight tingling or a sensation of warmth during the session. This sensation quickly fades after the treatment. Since the treatment involves an injection into the veins, mild bruising may appear. It naturally fades within 3 weeks, during which time patients should avoid exposing the treated area to the sun without protection.
